Johnny's Selected Seeds has a commitment to research and quality. We feel that this commitment helps to ensure our seeds are the highest-quality seeds available on the market.
Research
Our research department manages several breeding programs and performs acres of variety trials at Johnny's certified organic farm. Johnny's research program focuses on development of new seed varieties and research plays a key role in quality control efforts.
Variety trials involve performance comparisons between different vegetable, flower and herb seeds. We trial experimental varieties developed at our facilities, experimental varieties from breeders around the world, the varieties included in our catalog, and the best varieties carried by our competitors.
Our research staff uses specific criteria, depending on the crop, in their variety evaluations. Evaluation criteria commonly include things like vigor, earliness, appearance, disease and insect resistance, and flavor. It can often take several years to test and trial a variety before we are ready to introduce it to our customers.
Quality
Quality assurance is an integral part of Johnny's business. All seeds, plants, tools and supplies must meet Johnny's quality-assurance guidelines. To provide the best seed available, Johnny's minimum germination standards are much higher than required by law. In addition to high-germination seeds, we also ensure that commercial varieties are certified free of certain diseases and viruses.
Every seed lot in Johnny's inventory must be periodically tested for germination to comply with Federal Government standards. We now have the only two Registered Seed Technologists (RSTs) in New England administering testing in our lab, greenhouse, and outdoors under controlled conditions.
