Ordering on Johnny’s Website "My Account" (Online Web Account) General Questions

How can I fax an order to Johnny’s?
You may fax your catalog order form or the printable order form to:
(US Only): 1-800-738-6314
(Non-US): 1-207-861-8363

How do I start placing an order online with Johnny’s?
There are 3 primary ways to place items into your shopping cart for ordering:
(1) Order by Product Number (aka "Quick Order")
(2) Search for products by part number or keyword using the "Search" box in the upper left section of the site
(3) Clicking on a main product category (Vegetables), choosing a subcategory (tomatoes or tomatoes/heirloom)

When you perform a "Search" or click down through product categories, you also have the option to refine your search further on deeper product characteristics. The "Refine Selection By:" is located on the right side of the web page

The "Order by Product Number" section of the site requires you to have a catalog in hand. You enter in all the part numbers you are interested in, proceed to select sizes and quantities, then add the items quickly, en masse, to your shopping cart. TIP: If you fill out the boxes with part numbers and then discover you need to go check on something on the site, SAVE the items you’ve entered thus far so that when you come back to the Order by Product Number screen, you won’t have to re-enter your numbers. Also, please have patience with this section of the website. When you ask the database to search through up to 40 products at the same time and retrieve all the information associated with all those products, it takes the web system a moment or two to gather it all and present it to you.

I cannot log in with my e-mail address or password, what’s wrong?
There are a number of things that could be preventing you from logging in with your account information. The most common culprits are:
  1. Cookies are not enabled in your browser, or they are enabled but the settings are too strict.
  2. The password you are providing doesn’t match the password for your account.
  3. When your account was created, the e-mail address you provided was misspelled.
  4. Though you have been a customer of Johnny’s for a long time, an online account does not yet exist for you.

Password:
Johnny’s web system is case sensitive. It’s possible that the password you are providing for login doesn’t match the password in our database for your account. Check to make sure that CAPS-LOCK isn’t on. If you cannot remember what you provided for a password, you may use the password reminder tool on the "My Account" page. Enter your e-mail address in the "E-mail Address" text box and then click on "Forgot your password?" and your password will be e-mailed to you (this assumes that (1) the email address in our system matches the one you provided and (2) that you have an online account - if either of these conditions is violated, you won’t receive your password reminder). If you do not receive a password reminder within seconds, please email our WebChick for assistance.

Misspelled E-mail Address:
It’s possible that when you set up your online account, your e-mail address was accidentally misspelled. This happens often. The quickest way to resolve this is to e-mail the WebChick and please provide your name and your e-mail address (double-check spelling). She can then search for your account and correct it. Since we’re all about options at Johnny’s, you could also simply try to guess how you misspelled your e-mail address and make a game out of it, but your head might hurt after a while. Send an e-mail, we’re happy to help (and save you a headache).

No Online Account:
Some of our customers understandably, but mistakenly, assume that because they’ve placed orders with Johnny’s before and are an active customer that an online web account automatically exists for them. Johnny’s internal customer records are not integrated with the web site (yet). Unless you physically register for an account on the website, it will not exist. There are 2 ways to create an account online:
  1. Click on "My Account" at the top of the website and on the right, click the button called "Create an Account". Step through the screens, be sure to spell your e-mail address correctly, and create an account.
  2. On the shipping page of checkout, on the right, there will be boxes for the e-mail address and password to "Login for Express Checkout". This login area is intended for registered members, but if you aren’t registered, you can fill in your information, and if an account is not found you’ll be provided with a link to create an account.

Did my web account information get erased when you upgraded your website in October 2005?
No, it did not. This question assumes that you had an account in the web database before the site was upgraded. When the new website was launched all existing customer information was transferred over and none of it was lost.

How can I contact Johnny’s?
All of our contact information is contained in the Customer Service section of our web site under the header for "Where to Find Us". For your convenience, here is a direct link to our contact information.

What does "treated" and "pelleted" mean?
Treated refers to seeds that have a coating of fungicides and/or insecticides on them (usually colored green or pink) intended to protect the seeds from rotting or insect damage in the soil before germination. The treatment in no way harms or alters the plant that emerges and it has no ill effects on the fruit the plant bears or on the soil. Treated varieties of Johnny’s seeds are designated with a "T" at the end or second to the end of the product part number. Any part number that contains a "T" is a treated variety.

Pelleted means that the seed is coated with an inert, clay-based material that improves the shape, size, and uniformity of raw (natural) seeds for more accurate sowing by hand or machine. The pellets do not harm the seeds or soil. As the pellets absorb moisture they split open, allowing immediate access to oxygen for fast, uniform seedling emergence. Many of Johnny’s lettuce and carrot varieties are pelleted, as well as a few flower varieties. Pelleted varieties of Johnny’s seeds are designated with a "P" at the end or second to the end of the product part number. Any part number that contains a "P" is a pelleted variety.

Why is Johnny’s seed more expensive than other seed companies?
That is a good question and it deserves an honest answer. A lot of value is packed into a Johnny’s seed packet. Our company has extensive research trial fields where we grow, observe, and in some cases breed new varieties that pass our stringent criteria for taste, appearance, disease resistance, tolerance of variable growing conditions, germination rates, and many more characteristics. We don’t simply resell seed. When you purchase a packet of Johnny’s seeds, it includes a 100% satisfaction guarantee for performance. Our seeds are well known for excellent germination rates and top quality. This all results in less effort, less money, and less risk for our customers.

Johnny’s customer service is also top-rate. If you are unhappy, we are unhappy, and we strive to make your purchase and gardening experience the best it can be. When you call us a live person answers the phone. Your wait, we hope, is minimal, and when you get a customer service representative on the phone, they are trained and knowledgeable in gardening. They can answer most of your questions, and if they cannot, they can walk down the hall and find someone who can.

Our extensive product testing, our knowledgeable staff, and our quick, customized shipping all translate into saved time and money for you, our customer. Our products are priced to reflect our devotion to quality, great information, and superior customer service. We know you expect nothing less. And as the old adage goes, "you get what you pay for".

Why are Johnny’s shipping costs so high?
There are a few reasons why total shipping on an order may result in overall higher shipping costs.

The most frequent question we are asked is "Why does it costs $3.50 to ship a packet of seeds that costs $1.50?!? The shipping is more than my order!" Johnny’s unyielding devotion to quality is the reason for this. Unlike some other seed companies, we aren’t going to stick a packet of seeds in an envelope and mail it to you. The seed would inevitably be damaged in some manner by the processing and handling in the mail route. We pack every order with care to ensure that your seed arrives in the condition it was in our storage facility. This is one of the reasons behind our unbeatable germination rates. The smallest package we can ship, with it’s packing and box, costs Johnny’s $3.50 to ship based on its final weight.

Johnny’s also carries a wide range of products, most of which ship at separate times due to seasonal sensitivity. Most orders placed with Johnny’s are divided up into multiple shipments for this reason. Though you are charged only once for shipping, the total shipping cost is a little more due to the separation of products into different packages for appropriate and timely shipping to you. You wouldn’t want your strawberry plants shipped to you in January with your other seed items, for the roots would perish before you could get them in the ground. You wouldn’t want your spring-flowering bulbs shipped to you in May because then you’d need to store them yourself for months before they could be planted, and chances are the survival rate of those bulbs would be decreased. We care about the quality of our product and we won’t cut corners when we know it would harm your experience. Our care of our product, as well as simple seasonal timing, contributes to understandably increased shipping costs.

Finally, Johnny’s is known for the fastest shipping in the industry. We do not outsource our shipping at a reduced rate. Because we value quality so highly, we do it ourselves. This level of control allows us to ensure that your product arrives to you in top condition. Aside from these value-added services, Johnny’s uses standard, published, UPS and USPS rates based on shipping zone and total package weight. There are no hidden or padded fees here. The costs for shipping cover Johnny’s costs to ship it to you, plain and simple, with all the quality assurance built in.
