4 Keys to Successful Carrot Culture
Carrots: Successful Growing Tips

Carrots may be the most universally grown, if not the most loved of all vegetables. Horticulturally speaking, however, they can be quite particular, and even experienced farmers and gardeners can find them to be one of the more challenging vegetables to grow. Still, something would seem amiss at the vegetable stand if there were no carrots on offer. Their bright colors, diverse shapes and uses, and expansive harvest window make knowing how to grow carrots a talent worth cultivating. In response to many customer requests for carrot-growing advice, the carrot experts here at Johnny's recently rolled up their sleeves and dug in to write this four-part guide to carrot culture. Here are the main points we cover in this month's JSS Advantage:
•  4 Keys to Carrot Culture: Bed Preparation, Spacing, Weeding, & Watering »
•  Carrot Season Extension: Types & Varieties to Get the Most from Your Carrot Beds »
•  Carrot Harvest Tips, Post-Harvest Handling, & Storage »
•  Quick Guide to Carrot Pests & Diseases»

Carrot Types
Baby vs Full-Size Early Harvest

Johnny's offers a number of different carrot types to provide for the broadest range of growing conditions and widest growing window. Here are some key defining features of each type.
Parisian: Small, top-shaped roots. French heirloom with sweet flavor.
Nantes: Cigar-shaped roots with blunt tips, with some being more pointed and not as blunt-tipped as others.
Chantenay: Broad shouldered, tapered roots, with pointed to slightly rounded tips.
Imperator: Long, slender roots that often reach 10" or more in length.
Kuroda: Similar in shape to Chantenay but typically bulkier, heavier, and more rounded at root tip.
