Growing Information:
CULTURE: Mache prefers cool weather. For early spring and fall crop; winter harvest where temperatures aren't severe, and in cold greenhouses. Plant Sept./Oct. for spring crop (at same time overwintering spinach is sown); early spring for late spring crop. Sow about 1" apart in a solid bed, or for mechanical cultivation, in strips 4" wide in rows 18" apart. Germinates slowly in 10-14 days. Thin to 2" apart (use thinnings as "baby mache"). Harvest entire rosette by pinching off at the root when 2 1/2" tall. Mache is bolt-resistant, but its flavor declines when overmature. It can also be raised to maturity in an ordinary flat. AVG. DIRECT SEEDING RATE: 750'/oz., 5 1/4 lb./acre at 36 seeds/ft. in rows 12" apart. Up to double this rate is often used. SEED SPECS: SEEDS/OZ.: 17,000-22,000 (avg. 18,750). MINI: 1 gm. (avg. 650 seeds, sows 20' at 30 seeds/ft.). |
