Sudangrass (Piper)

(Sorghum bicolor var. sudanense)
Vigorous summer cover crop out-competes weeds.
An excellent catch crop for excess nitrogen, sudangrass reduces nematode and symphylan populations as it decomposes. It grows quickly and needs to be mowed regularly to control height (up to 7 ft.). Great for livestock forage, but should be grazed only when mature and NEVER after a frost due to high levels of glucosides, which convert to prussic acid and are toxic. Plant late spring to early summer when the soil is warm, 1-2 lb./1,000 sq.ft. (30-40 lb./acre.) Choose organic or nonorganic seeds. Avg. 42,300 seeds/lb.
Plant Cycle: (A)
