Baby Bear (Treated)
(Cucurbita pepo)
|
|
Kids love them.
This 1993 All-America Selections winner received high marks in official AAS trials across North America. Baby Bear is a unique size and shape, and is often called "the perfect mini pumpkin" by growers. Deep orange, 1 1/2-2 1/2-lb. fruits are about half the size of a normal pie pumpkin. With slender, sturdy, easy-to-grip handles, they are very appealing to children. One of Baby Bear's parents was New England Pie and the other was a small "naked" seed pumpkin, so in addition to its decorative use, the flesh is good for pies and the semi-hulless seeds are good for roasted snacks. High yield potential, avg. 8 pumpkins per vine. Superior storage quality.

Growing Information:
CULTURE: Refer to "Winter Squash." TIMING: Seed pumpkins to mature in Sept. for shipping and in early Oct. for retail. Too many days of sun on fruits in the field after maturity will bleach handles and sunscald the fruits. HARVEST: Before frost or after 1 or 2 light frosts. Clip stems close to the vine. Use care to avoid gouging or bruising. Store under cover in boxes or bins. AVG. DIRECT SEEDING RATE: 130'/oz., 8 oz./1,000', 3 1/2 lbs./acre at 2 seeds/18" in rows 6' apart, (9,800 seeds/acre at 2,800 seeds/lb.). TRANSPLANTS: Avg. 58 pots or cells/oz., 930 pots or cells/lb. at 3 seeds/pot. SEED SPECS: SEEDS/LB.: 2,300-4,000 (avg. 2,800). PACKET: Avg. 5 gm. unless otherwise noted (avg. 30 seeds). |
