Growing Information:
CULTURE: PLANTING: After last frost date plant 6-10 seeds/ft., 1" deep, rows 15-30" apart. Upright plants are easier to cultivate. FRESH SOYBEAN HARVEST & COOKING: Most pods ripen at once. Clip plants near base when the beans are plump in the pods. Beans attain their highest fresh weight just as pods begin to lose their bright green color. Hand-strip remaining leaves and tie small bunches of plants for retailing. Shelling tips: strip pods, rinse, and steam or boil about five minutes, or until tender. (Package for freezing at this point.) DRY SOYBEAN HARVEST: When at least 90% of the leaves have fallen and the pods are dry, pull the plants out by the roots. Complete drying under cover if weather is rainy. THRESHING: Depending on quantity, thresh by (1) stepping on a large, closed bag full of dry plants, (2) beating small piles of plants with a flail. A simple flail can be fashioned by attaching a 2" diameter, 18" long piece of hardwood to a broom handle with twine, or (3) using a properly adjusted threshing machine. STORAGE: Make sure beans are dry (max. 9% moisture) and then store in a cool place. Freeze dry beans to control storage insect pests. NUTRITION: Average protein 16% fresh, 40% dry, or about twice that of lima beans. AVG. SEEDING RATE: 225'/lb., 5 lb./1,000', 80 lb./acre at 8 seeds/ft. and rows 30" apart. SEED SPECS: SEEDS/LB.: 1,500-2,000 (avg. 1,800). PACKET: 2 oz. (avg. 225 seeds, sows 25-35').
