Growing Information:
CULTURE: SOIL TEMPERATURE: Cold soil planting risks poor stands! Treated corn seeds will not germinate below 55°F (13°C) and risk low germination under 60°F (16°C). Only treated seeds of good cold-germinating varieties may be sown in 55°F or colder soil in anticipation of warming. Otherwise wait to sow treated seeds until 9:00 a.m. soil temp. is over 55°F. Make first sowings of UNTREATED seeds when soil is warm, at least 65°F (18°C). PLANTING: Plant 1" deep, 6-7" apart, rows 30-36" apart. Increase this rate for untreated seeds. Plant in blocks of at least 4 rows for proper pollination, which is needed for well-filled ears. Successive plantings can be made through early summer; most growers prefer to cover the sweet corn season by planting a few varieties of different maturities. INSECT PESTS: Consult your local Extension office for recommended worm pest controls. Important in the control of worm pests is prompt plowing in or removal and composting of cornstalks after harvest. RACCOONS: Trap in season. Plant the crop away from wooded areas. An electric fence with 3 strands placed at 3-4" intervals has given satisfactory control. HARVEST: When kernels are full and "milky," generally indicated by a drying and browning of the ear silks. Corn is ready to eat 18-24 days after silk first shows; the warmer the weather, the sooner you can pick it. DAYS TO MATURITY: Varies widely with weather conditions and planting dates. Use these figures to compare one variety to another, not to accurately predict maturity on a given day. AVG. SEEDING RATE: SU/SE TYPE (@2,500 seeds/lb. avg.): 1,250'/lb. (500 ft./1,000 seeds at 2 seeds/ft.), 11.6 lb. (or 29,040 seeds)/acre at 2 seeds/ft. in rows 36" apart. SEED SPECS: SEEDS/LB.: 1,800-5,500 (avg. 2,500 su/se type). PACKET: 1 oz. (avg. 150 seeds, sows 38' at 4 seeds/ft.). NOTE: PLEASE SPECIFY TREATED (T) OR UNTREATED SEEDS! Most varieties are offered UNTREATED for organic growers. Most varieties are also offered TREATED (T) with specific fungicide seed protectants. All treated corn seeds are polymer-coated after treatment to prevent rubbing off or dusting of the treatment. |
