Beans, Bush Dry

CULTURE: All varieties listed are the bush types and should be planted like bush snap beans. NOTE: Our dry bean seeds are not fungicide treated. Sow only when soil has warmed to at least 60°F (16°C). When at least 90% of the leaves have fallen and the pods are dry, pull the plants out by the roots. Complete drying under cover if weather is rainy. DISEASES: Diseases affecting beans include blights, anthracnose, and mosaic. Plant in well-drained soil, keep free of weeds, and do not handle when wet with rain or dew. Plow in all bean straw in the fall and practice rotation for a minimum of 3 years. THRESHING: Thresh by: (1) shelling pods individually, (2) holding several plants by the roots and banging back and forth inside a barrel or trash can, (3) stepping on a large, closed bag full of dry plants, (4) beating small piles of plants with a flail. A simple flail can be fashioned by attaching a 2" diameter, 18"-long piece of hardwood to a broom handle with twine, or (5) using a properly adjusted threshing machine. STORAGE: Make sure beans are dry and then store in a cool place. If there is any sign of weevils (small holes in beans), put well-dried beans in a jar or heavy bag and expose to freezing for a few hours. AVG. SEEDING RATE: 115'/lb., 9 lb./1,000', 125 lb./acre at 7 seeds/ft. in the row and rows 3' apart. SEED SPECS: SEEDS/LB.: 750-1,100 (avg. 800). PACKET: 2.5 oz. (avg. 100 seeds, sows 15').
