Organic control for earworms on sweet corn.
The Zea-Later II gives the organic grower a means to control corn earworms throughout the season by using small amounts of vegetable oil and Bt (var. kurstaki) applied directly to the silks. Researchers from the Univ. of Massachusetts and Hampshire College created an economical and effective method of applying this combination, with control in the 85-95% range compared to only 25-50% in the untreated samples. The best overall control of caterpillar pests, including European corn borer and fall armyworm, happened when use of the Zea-Later II was combined with foliar Bt sprays and standard IPM practices, and while maintaining healthy stands of sweet corn. Version II of the Zea-Later uses a mass-produced dispenser to improve the value to the customers.
