Growing Information:
Corn, Ornamental and Dry Field

CULTURE: Popcorn/Flour and Cornmeal/Ornamental: Grow like sweet corn, planting early to ensure maturity of kernels for a good, dry ripeness.
HARVEST: Normally corn is left out for several frosts, but the ears may be picked after the husks begin drying. Bring husked ears under cover to complete drying. Popcorn should be harvested when kernels are fully mature - hard and glossy - before picking the ears, or they won't pop well. After picking and husking, spread out the ears in a dry, airy place and allow to "cure" for several weeks. Periodic test-popping will tell you when the kernels are dry enough to store, either on the cob (a popular retail item!) or shelled. Pop in a dry or oiled saucepan on medium high, shaking constantly. To microwave, just put ears or kernels in a paper bag, twisted or folded closed.
DAYS TO MATURITY: Maturity was recorded here at our farm. (Lat. 44.5°N). Corn will generally mature earlier farther south, later farther north, all environmental conditions being equal.
AVG. SEEDING RATE: Popcorn: 1 lb./2,400 ft., 3/4 lb./1,800', 6 lb. (or 28,800 seeds)/acre at 2 seeds/ft. in rows 36" apart. Ornamental, Flour and Cornmeal: 1 lb./800 ft., 3/4 lb./600', 18.25 lb. (or 29,200 seeds)/acre at 2 seeds/ft. in rows 36' apart.
