Shallots

CULTURE: Seed Grown Type: Direct seed in early to mid spring (or in late summer to fall in areas where onions are seeded then) 1/2- 3/4" apart in a 2-4" wide band, 50 seeds/ft., 1/2" deep, rows 10-18" apart. Sown at this rate, from most seeds a single shallot will form; clusters will form if sown more thinly.
AVG. DIRECT SEEDING RATE: 50 seeds/row foot, 1,000 seeds/20', 1 1/2 million seeds/acre in rows 18" apart.
PACKET: 250 seeds, sows 5'.
SETS: Divide into individual bulblets. Push into the soil about 3/4 their length deep, 6" apart in narrow rows, in early to mid spring. Each set will multiply 6-10 or more times, depending on fertility and planting time, with earlier plantings more productive.
AVG. SET PLANTING RATE (can vary greatly): 30'/lb. at 6" spacing, 34 lb./1,000', 970 lb./acre, in rows 18" apart.
SET SPECS: 50-90 sets/lb. (avg. 60). 1 lb. plants avg. 32' (varies).
HARVEST, BOTH TYPES: Harvest in summer when tops fall and begin to brown. Dry in an airy place. Store near freezing at 60-70% humidity.
DAY LENGTH: Like onions (see onion culture box), all shallots are day length sensitive. Bulb formation is triggered by long days. Time sowing so the plantlet has at least 3-4 leaves before the longest day.
BOLTING: Induced by exposure to cold temperatures after the plant has 3-5 leaves.
