Cabbage, Chinese

CULTURE: SPRING PLANTED CROPS: Use our bolt-resistant varieties. In the greenhouse sow 1"-1 1/2" plug trays and transplant out in 3-5 weeks taking care not to disturb roots, and water-in plants.
SUMMER-FALL PLANTED CROPS: Sow 3 seeds every 12-18" (thin to 1 plant) in rows 18-30" apart, late May to late July, or grow from transplants as above. Observe sowing dates in variety descriptions.
BOLTING: The crop performs best in the gradually decreasing day length and temperatures of late summer. For spring and early summer planted crops, bolt-resistant variety selection is critical! Even the most bolt-resistant varieties may prematurely bolt to seed if young plants are exposed to frost or over a week of sub 50°F (10°C) nights. Wait until about the last frost date or after to direct seed or transplant out, or protect the plants with fabric row covers (see Index).
DISEASE: Practice preventive crop rotation and sanitation.
INSECT PESTS: Control flea beetles and cabbage root maggots with floating row covers from day of planting. ( See Index)
STORAGE: Heads will store 1-2 months in a near-freezing, humid cooler, or in a root cellar if trimmed and wrapped in newspaper.
DAYS TO MATURITY: From transplanting; add 14-21 days for direct seeding.
AVG. PRECISION SEEDING RATE: 3,125'/oz., 7 oz./acre at 3 seeds/ft. in rows 2' apart.
TRANSPLANTS: Avg. 6,500 plants/oz.
SEED SPECS: SEEDS/OZ.: 8,500-8,750 (Avg. 8,625)
PACKET: 100 seeds sows 33'.
