CULTURE: Strawberries grow well in well-drained soils in a sunny location. Soil pH for strawberries should be between 6.0 and 6.8, with added organic matter for best growth. Strawberries do best when they receive 1-2" of rainfall or the equivalent each week, depending on soil type. When planting, two factors are critical: depth of planting, and soil compression. Plants will fail to flourish if roots are too deep or too shallow, and if the soil is not packed firmly around the roots. Our experience indicates that keeping the roots moist is critical for transplanting success. It is important to note that production and berry size in day neutrals can sometimes decline during the hottest part of summer. Cooler temperatures of autumn will bring a return of berry size and yield.
PLANTING: Set plants in desired container or hanging basket as soon as they arrive to be sure they have enough time to fruit. Plant 1 plant per 3-4" pot or 3-5 plants per 8" pot/hanging basket. Set plants with the roots straight down. Care should be taken that plants are set with the middle of the crown level with the top of the soil (see illustration). Water well to get your plants off to the best start. Use a 75°F(24°C)/55°F(13°C) day/night temperature cycle.
SOIL NUTRITION: Maintaining optimal soil nutrition with compost - or 10/10/10 if using non-organic fertilizers - will result in good, vigorous plant growth. Fertilize in small quantities on a regular basis to encourage adequate growth and to avoid over-fertilization. Over-fertilizing leads to weak, disease-prone growth and soft berries.
