For fruit crop or as an ornamental.

Fall-bearing. Cranberries are native to North America and are known for their dark-red fruit that is high in antioxidants. Contrary to popular belief, cranberries do not grow in water but they do require an acid peat soil, consistent moisture, and a cold dormant period. Johnny's offers 4 year-old plants in 6" pots that can be grown in a prepared field for a fruit crop, or in a large container as an ornamental. The Stevens variety was bred by the USDA cranberry breeding program and was named after cranberry researcher Neil Stevens. Cranberries are perennial in Zones 2-6, but are not recommended for Zones 7 and higher as they cannot tolerate warmer climates.

    Growing Information

    Cranberries

CULTURE: Cranberries prefer full sun and highly organic, acidic soil. Prepare the bed by removing the top 6 inches of soil. Replace the soil with a 50:50 mixture of peat moss and coarse, sharp sand (similar to beach sand or general purpose sand). Mix the peat moss often to help absorb water.
PLANTING: Space the plants 4' x 4', planting the root ball slightly below the surface.
HARVEST: Beginning the first year, harvest berries by hand when red, from late September to late October.
SPECS: One 4' x 4' bed may yield up to 5 lb. of fruit in the third and fourth year of production.
