CULTURE: Direct seed in early to mid spring (or in late summer to fall in areas where onions are seeded then) 1/2- 3/4" apart in a 2-4" wide band, 50 seeds/ft., 1/2" deep, rows 10-18" apart. Sown at this rate, from most seeds a single shallot will form; clusters will form if sown more thinly. HARVEST: Harvest in summer when tops fall and begin to brown. Dry in an airy place. Store near freezing at 60-70% relative humidity. DAY LENGTH: Like onions (see onion culture box), all shallots are day length sensitive. Bulb formation is triggered by long days. Time sowing so the plantlet has at least 3-4 leaves before the longest day. BOLTING: Induced by exposure to cold temperatures after the plant has 3-5 leaves. AVG.
