Sturdier and more upright than other Scabiosa. 1 1/2-2 1/2" blooms are salmon red, dark blue, and salmon pink. Heat tolerant plants. Also known as mourningbride. Ht. 24-36". Avg. 5,700 seeds/oz. Packet: 50 seeds.
DAYS TO GERMINATION: 10-12 days at 65-70°F (18-21°C).
SOWING: Successive plantings 2-3 weeks apart until midsummer will give the best quality flowers and pods. Support is required. Transplant: Sow 4-6 weeks before last frost. Barely cover as light aids germination. Transplant to cell packs or larger containers when the first true leaves appear. In the greenhouse, grow transplants at 50-55°F (10-13°C) to keep the plants from stretching. Harden off and transplant outside after the last frost. Direct seed: Sow 1/4" deep after last frost date.
HARVEST: For S. atropurpurea: Fresh – When flowers are almost fully open. For S. stellata: Fresh Cut or Dried – Harvest when seed heads are light green with dark-bronze edges and the star-shaped centers are just turning black. If harvested after the centers have fully turned, or begun to fall out, the seed head will shatter.
USES: Excellent cut flower. Back of beds and borders.
