Growing Information

CULTURE: Strawberries prefer a sunny location and moist, well-drained soil, richly fertilized with compost or aged manure, and a pH between 6.5-6.8. Prepare beds the previous fall or in early spring to get good control over perennial weeds.
PLANTING: Transplant the plugs into single rows or staggered double rows with 12" between plants, and 36" between rows. Place the plugs so that the bottoms of the plants are level with the soil surface – strawberry plants will not thrive if planted too shallow or too deep. Remove any flowers that form for six weeks after planting, and remove all runners during the first summer of growth in order to allow the root systems to become established. Because these varieties are day-neutral, they will flower and bear fruit from midsummer until frost. Mulch with straw in late fall when plants have died back. Pull mulch aside in spring when plants start to grow. Leave the mulch in the aisles to keep the fruit clean and help suppress weeds.
HARVEST: Plants will bear fruit in the late summer and early fall of the first year, with a normal, full-harvest season beginning in late spring of the second year.
SPECS: 100 plants/100' row, or 14,520 plants/acre at 12" spacing, rows 3' apart.
