Mechanical Design Engineer

The Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team, with a specific focus on the design, development, and improvement of our tools and supplies offering. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical engineering and a passion for creating high-quality, user-friendly products that meet the needs of gardeners and growers. This role requires creativity, technical expertise, and the ability to work closely with cross-functional teams to bring new products to market and enhance our existing offerings. This is a full-time salaried position local to Albion, Maine and/or Hybrid (3-2), or fully remote.

Responsibilities:

  • Product Design and Development:
    • You design and develop new gardening tools and supplies, from concept to production, ensuring functionality, durability, and user-friendliness.
    • You create detailed 3D models, prototypes, and specifications using CAD software.
    • You collaborate with product managers, R&D, and marketing teams to understand customer needs and translate them into innovative product designs.
    • You evaluate and select appropriate materials and manufacturing processes for new products.
  • Product Improvement:
    • You continuously improve existing tools and supplies by identifying areas for enhancement in design, ergonomics, and manufacturing efficiency.
    • You conduct field testing and gather feedback from users to refine product designs and ensure they meet performance and quality standards.
    • You implement design changes based on customer feedback, production constraints, and cost considerations.
  • Project Management:
    • You lead and manage multiple design and development projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and meet quality standards.
    • You coordinate with suppliers, manufacturers, and internal teams to manage the product development lifecycle, from prototype to production.
    • You oversee the development of product documentation, including design specifications, testing protocols, and user manuals.
  • Innovation and Research:
    • You stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitor products to drive innovation in Johnny's tool and supply offerings.
    • You explore new materials, technologies, and manufacturing processes to enhance product performance and reduce costs.
    • You engage in continuous learning and professional development to bring fresh ideas and technical expertise to the team.
  • Collaboration and Support:
    • You work closely with the product management, quality assurance, and marketing teams to ensure product designs align with market needs and brand standards.
    • You provide technical support and guidance to production teams during the manufacturing process to resolve design-related issues.
    • You participate in cross-functional meetings to discuss project status, challenges, and opportunities for product innovation.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Product Design, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in mechanical engineering, product design, or a related area, preferably in the consumer products or tool design industry.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and experience with prototyping and testing tools.
  • Strong understanding of product development processes, including material selection, manufacturing methods, and design for manufacturability (DFM).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, creativity, and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Experience with project management and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of gardening or agricultural tools and supplies is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in an office or workshop/farm environment, including standing, walking, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to travel as needed to other company locations, suppliers, or industry events.
