Plants, or seeds harvested from plants, that have been grown without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, strictly adhering to the USDA's National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) organic gardening practices are designated as Organic.

For supplies, such as fertilizers and pest and disease controls, the OG symbol identifies products that meet the USDA's National Organic Program (NOP) rules according to a third-party authority such as OMRI, WSDA, and/or a local authority such as MOFGA or NOFA.

Soybeans (Viking 2265)

Soybeans (Viking 2265)Organic Cover Crop Seed

Product ID: 225G

An excellent cover crop, livestock feed, or smother crop.

Frost sensitive - plant in late spring when soil is warmer. Soybeans can be grown during the warm summer months for seed, organic matter, and for the estimated 130 lb. of nitrogen per acre they add upon breakdown. For maximum nitrogen addition, plow down once the seeds have set in the pods. An excellent cover crop, livestock feed, or smother crop. Soybeans are also used as a trap crop for deer. Once the soil has warmed and germination takes place, soybeans will grow rapidly and will compete with weeds. 3-4' tall, bushy plants. High nitrogen fixation and phytopthora resistance. Most roots are in the top 8" of soil, but some taproots can penetrate up to 6' giving the plant some resistance to drought stress. Plant in a rich, well-drained soil that is high in organic matter. A Ph of 6.0-6.8 is preferred. Pests include Mexican Bean Beetles, Leaf Hoppers and, and Japanese Beetles. Plants mowed or grazed will not dependably regrow. For a cover crop, drill or broadcast at 4 lb./1,000 sq.ft. (150 lb./acre). For grain harvest, plant with a corn planter at about 65 lb./acre. Inoculate with #9324 for best performance. Organically grown. Avg. 3,370 seeds/lb.
