What Is Air Pruning?

When seedlings grow in standard trays and their roots reach the cell walls, they begin to wrap, often becoming "root bound." If seedlings are grown in soil blocks or in air pruning trays like these, when the roots reach the edges of the cell and meet air, they "prune" themselves by halting root growth. This helps increase the amount of oxygen available to the roots, which can increase vigor. This also creates a substantial advantage when seedlings are transplanted into the field; reduced root disruption means they are less prone to transplant shock.

The high-density injection-molded polypropylene and staggered 72-cell pattern forms a resilient cell structure that make Johnny's Air-Pruning Trays durable for years of commercial use. Each 2 1/4" deep cell has two 1 1/2" slots that promote "air pruning." Trays are also BPA-free and food-safe.

Compatible with all Johnny's 1020 deep and shallow trays. These trays will also nest with 72-cell air-pruning trays from other manufacturers. Slotted ends allow you to more easily separate stacked trays.
