'Bigelow' Organic Mini-Head Lettuce Variety

This beautiful mini head lettuce combines the characteristics of crunchy romaine and juicy iceberg.

This variety is ready to harvest at about 45 days after transplanting, similar to most mini heads, little gems and romaines, and quite a bit earlier than most full-size head lettuce types.

Here, this variety is planted at eight-inch spacing.

It can take a tighter spacing– we often plant it at six inches; it performs very well at that spacing as well. You can see as I'm trimming this up, it's a nice, sweet little mini head, it closes up really nicely.

In the field, this variety has been consistent in being very slow bolting, resistant to tip burn, and also very resistant to twisting, which can sometimes happen with temperature fluctuations and seasonal changes in the field conditions. We've been very impressed with the performance.

If you want to peel it way back, you get this lovely heart. And then these cut leaves can be used in salad mix. You can see here, they're very thick, heavy, crunchy, juicy leaves. They also function really well as leaf wraps or for hors d'oeuvre purposes. And the mini size of these heads makes them very versatile for multiple uses and multiple market outlets.
