Kale, Ornamental

GERMINATION: 10-14 days at 70°F (21ºC).
CULTURE: Indoors: Sow directly in cell packs 6-8 weeks before planting out. Harden off one week before planting out. Outdoors: Sow 3 months before expected fall frost. Thin to one plant per hole.
GROWING ON: After germination, grow seedlings at 60°F (16°C) for 3-4 weeks; harden off one week before planting out. Plants must be set out several weeks before last frost date. Plants will begin to color once temperatures drop below 50°F.
SPACING: 6". Plants spaced more than 6" will produce heads that are too large for cutflower use.
LIGHT/SOIL: Full sun; moist, well-drained soil. Discontinue fertilizing once plants begin to color.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: Once plants are about 6" tall, remove lower leaves. Repeat 3 or 4 times as plants grow taller. Provide horizontal netting. Good quality cutflower kale should have a 6" head on a 24" stem with good coloring.
