Common Purple Coneflower.
The easiest Echinacea to grow - germinates without stratification. Vigorous plants with large, purple-petaled flowers. Fibrous roots are easy to harvest (other species have taproots). Ht. 24-36". 7-day stratification enhances germination, but is not critical. Nonorganic. Hardiness Zones: 3-10. Sow any of the echinaceas outdoors in the fall to allow the oscillating temperatures and natural rain to stimulate germination. Normally grown for 3-4 years for harvest of sizeable roots. Avg. 7,500 seeds/oz. Packet: 200 seeds.
Plant Cycle: (P) Days to Maturity or Bloom: 300-365

Notes:
GERMINATION NOTE: Seeds germinate most readily if first stratified (kept moist and refrigerated, or sown in a cold frame in the winter.) See individual species for number of recommended days of stratification. The germination rate for non-stratified seeds can be low and erratic. Sow any of the echinaceas outdoors in the fall to allow the oscillating temperatures and natural rain to stimulate germination. Normally grown for 3-4 years for harvest of sizeable roots.
