Asparagus from seeds.

An all-male variety that was bred at Rutgers University. While crop rotation is ideal, this variety is a good option - due to its rust resistance and high tolerance to fusarium - if limited space necessitates replanting asparagus in the same location. Also does well in heavier soils. Perennial. Avg. 15,500 seeds/lb. Packet: 30 seeds.

Growing Information

CULTURE: Asparagus is a long-lived perennial vegetable crop. With proper site selection, preparation, and care, it can thrive for 15 years or more. Asparagus prefers well-drained, fertile soil, with a pH of 7.0 in full sun or part shade. Soil testing and bed preparation should be completed the season prior to planting. In the early spring prior to planting, apply compost, aged manure, or complete fertilizer, and work into the soil 1' deep. Asparagus may not perform well in TX, MS, GA, LA, AL, or FL, as it may not become dormant in these warmer regions. Dormancy is needed to prevent frost/freeze damage to crowns in winter months.
GROWING FROM SEEDS: Sow seeds indoors 12-14 weeks before transplanting. Sow 1 seed per 2" cell or pot, 3/4" deep. Germinate at 75-80°F (23-27°C) day, 65°F (18°C) night. Fertilize seedlings moderately as needed and wash fertilizer off foliage. After the danger of frost has passed, plant seedlings similarly to crowns, but use a W shaped trench. Plant the seedlings in the middle point of the W, to keep the roots well-drained in case of heavy rain.
PLANTING CROWNS: Crowns can be planted outdoors about 3-4 weeks prior to last average frost date. Place crowns with buds upright in a furrow 5-8" deep (shallower for heavy soils, deeper for sandy soils), and wide enough that roots can be spread out. Space crowns 8-14" apart in the row (closer planting will result in more slender spears) with 3-6' between rows. Cover crowns with 2- 3" of soil at planting. As plants grow, gradually fill in furrow during cultivation, but do not completely cover plants. The furrow should be completely filled after 3-4 cultivations the first year. Use caution when cultivating, as damage to the crowns can open the plant to soil-borne diseases. Keep bed free of weeds and irrigate regularly during the growing season. Hay, straw, or leaf mulch may be applied in midsummer to help conserve moisture and control weeds. The "ferns" that grow feed the roots; don't cut them back until they senesce (die naturally) in the fall. Asparagus is a heavy feeder and should be fertilized regularly. Add compost or aged manure to the beds each fall or early spring.
HARVEST: One year after planting, the bed can be harvested in spring for 7-10 days. Two years after planting, the bed may be harvested for 2-3 weeks. In the third year a normal harvest of 6 weeks is possible. Spears are considered marketable when 7" in length and pencil-size in diameter. Harvest by bending spears over until they snap, or cut with knife at soil level. Store harvested spears upright at 36°F (2.2°C) and 95-100% relative humidity for up to 2 weeks.
