Farm Seed Grains Barley
Barley grain heads against a white background.
Barley
Plant barley like spring wheat; it is tolerant of cool spring temperatures, and the earliest-seeded crops provide the best yields. Barley matures earlier than spring wheat, and is comparable to corn in protein content; a good choice for organic growers under conditions that make corn a challenging crop. Barley hulls are similar to those of oats; animals like it better if ground into mash, though chickens will eat it whole. Tolerates a wide range of soil pH, from 5.0 to 8.0.
