'Frizzle Sizzle Mini Tapestry' Viola From Johnny's

This variety is 'Frizzle Sizzle Mini Tapestry Mix', and this is a variety that has been planted in an overwintered tunnel.

These plants were planted on October 6th, spent the winter in the tunnel, and then in late March and early April, when the days lengthen and the temperatures increase, the stems start to elongate.

We start harvesting off of these when the stems reach about 12 inches in length. For this variety, that was about a week ago. It's the first week of May right now, so we were able to start harvesting off of these for cuts in late April.

One thing I do want to mention about that is that if you're not growing them in a overwintered tunnel environment; if you're planting them in a landscape or outside in a container, I would expect the plants to be much more compact and not elongate quite as much as this, but you would still experience the same color mix and bloom quality and fragrance and all of the other characteristics that make this variety special grown in a different environment.

In terms of special characteristics, one thing that's unique about this variety is the ruffle on the blooms. The Frizzle Sizzle series has a bit of a wave or a frill around the edges of the blooms, which adds some interest and texture.

One other thing to note about this variety if you are growing it in a overwintered tunnel for cut flowers, is that the plants may not be quite as productive as some of the smaller-flowered viola varieties. But in terms of the quality of those stems, they tend to be a little bit thicker and sturdier stems. And the stems that you do harvest tend to be of good quality.
