Attracts butterflies and bees. Grows well in arid soils. Also known as milkweed, butterfly weed, butterfly milkweed, and butterfly-weed. Medicinal: Roots are a respiratory expectorant and diaphoretic. Perennial in zones 4-9. NOTE: Wild populations of Pleurisy Root have been deemed to be in danger of extinction. Harvesting of plants in the wild is strongly discouraged. Ht. 12-24". Avg. 5,500 seeds/oz. Packet: 100 seeds.

Growing Information

Asclepias

DAYS TO GERMINATION: 14-21 days at 65-70°F (18-21°C).

SOWING: Transplant (recommended): Sow 10-12 weeks before last frost. Gently press seeds into mix. Begins taproot growth upon germination. Do not allow to become pot bound at any time as plants will deteriorate rapidly. Transplant into cell packs or 3-4" pots 3-5 weeks after sowing. Harden off and transplant outdoors after the last frost.
Direct seed: Can be sown in the fall or spring.

LIGHT PREFERENCE: Sun.

SOIL: Well-drained, sandy loam to poor soil.

PLANT HEIGHT: Varies.

PLANT SPACING: 12-24".

HARDINESS ZONES: Varies.

HARVEST: Fresh: Harvest when 1/2 to 2/3 of flowers are open on a stem. If stems wilt after harvest, rehydrate in water for 24 hours.

USES: Cut flower. Borders, containers, and butterfly gardens.
