All-America Selections is an independent, nonprofit organization that trials new varieties alongside two or three similar varieties currently on the market, then introduces only the best garden performers as AAS Winners. Submitted vegetable and flower varieties are tested by a geographically divergent network of independent judges to determine whether their garden performance is truly superior, with winners chosen on the basis of scores received from judges at 34 sites in the U.S. and Canada. In addition to producing attractive cut flowers, this heat tolerant, low-maintenance rudbeckia makes a high-impact landscaping plant. Growing Information

Rudbeckia

GERMINATION: 8-14 days at 68-72ºF (20-22ºC).
CULTURE: Indoors - 8-10 weeks before last frost. Light is needed for germination, cover seed lightly. Bottom water or mist to avoid covering seed. Transplant out after danger of frost is past. Outdoors - 2 weeks before last frost, in groups of 3-4 seeds. Thin. Deadheading increases bloom. Best grown as annual. Reseeds.
LIGHT/SOIL: Full sun; average, well-drained soil.
SPACING: 12-18".
USE: Fresh or dried cut flower, beds, pots, back of borders, wildflower plantings, meadows, cottage gardens.
HARVEST: Blooms are completely open. Dry in silica gel.
