Heirloom seeds owe their survival to having been carefully harvested, stored, and passed down from generation to generation of growers. Because they are open-pollinated, the resulting seed will produce plants with the same characteristics as the parent plant, thus perpetuating the variety.
Many heirloom crops have richer flavor and texture, though some may be less productive, than today's hybrids. At Johnny's, we look for the best of both worlds: heirlooms that deliver the highest marketable yield without compromising on flavor. We could offer hundreds more heirloom varieties, but our careful selection process pares it down to only the very best. We want to thank the many gardeners who have sent us heirloom seeds for trial and the Seed Savers' Exchange for their spirited cooperation.
